EPA Fails East Omaha Over Toxic Lead
Environmental racism continues to threaten Black health as federal regulators refuse to clean toxic lead levels in East Omaha. Decades of industrial pollution and redlining leave Black and low-income families exposed to severe health hazards without adequate government protection.
East Omaha was designated a Superfund site twenty-five years ago after alarming lead levels were detected in local children. Though federal regulators remediated thousands of yards, recent changes to health standards mean thousands of additional homes now exceed safe limits. Despite knowing these toxic dangers persist in historically redlined Black and brown neighborhoods, federal environmental officials have refused to commit to comprehensive cleanups, citing bureaucratic thresholds and limited funding. As a result, working-class families remain trapped in contaminated environments without regulatory relief.
